Beyond Yoga Postures for Students and Teachers
Yoga is now moving into a new phase, beyond the yoga postures that we have all come to know as “Yoga”. Yoga began in ancient times as a holistic way to promote health, healing and beyond. It was the ultimate integration of body and mind. But when it came to the western world, many yoga students began to focus on the physical and athletic aspects of the practice. Yoga became synonymous with “asana”, the postures.
But Yoga is coming back to its holistic roots; back to integration of the mind and body. Many yoga classes are popping up that involve chanting, breathing exercises and meditation. Even body-focused traditions like Core Power Yoga are now offering Yoga Sutra Philosophy classes. Major universities like Loyola Marymount University in Marina Del Rey, CA are now offering college credit for Yoga Sutra classes.
This creates an interesting dilemma for many Yoga Teachers. It is possible that the teacher came to Yoga with a love of the postures and the physical human form. But now the students are asking for more of their teachers, more refinement in the teaching of Yoga. For example, a student comes to the teacher with low back pain. There does not seem to be any reason structurally for the pain. But an advanced Yoga Teacher knows that oftentimes security issues reside in the low back area and has the good sense to ask the student if there might be a connection. Sure enough, the student admits that his house is near foreclosure and he is really scared about the security of his family financially. It is clear that there is now a demand for teachers to learn beyond the basics of the postures. Many students are feeling a deep yearning for something more emotionally. Students are asking for “food for the soul” in their yoga classes.
This means that Yoga Instructors need more training in the areas of healing breathing techniques, the steps of meditation according to the Yoga Sutras and study of the ancient yogic texts- including the study of Sanskirt! Just when Yoga Teachers thought that a 200-hour certification was enough, now this! It is clear that in order to be Master Yoga Teacher, training in asana (postures) is no longer enough. Students are asking for inspiration from their teacher, to promote an inner revolution. Yoga is the new psychotherapy. Healing from the inside out is the reason people are resonating with their Yoga practices.
But the good news is that the desire of the students is causing the Yoga Teachers to reach deeper into themselves. And that is what Yoga is all about. An ancient Yogic saying goes something like this, “When the student is ready, the teacher will arrive.” What that means is that the student comes to the teacher and asks to learn. It is the teacher’s duty to teach the student when they ask. The beauty in this ancient tradition is that it is the teacher who gains as much as the student. In seeking to teach, the teacher goes more and more deeply into his or her own practice and self-transformation.
Students, ask your Yoga Teacher to teach you the more deep and subtle tools of yoga, as they will transform your life. Teachers, follow the request of your students and challenge yourself to transform as you learn more. In giving to the student, they actually receive. Just like the inhalation and exhalation of the breath- each giving to the other.
