to lose 10lbs for modeling body. pilates or wt training?
i have always wanted to try to be a swimsuit model. i have about 10 to 15 lbs to lose. im doing 2 hours of cardio a day. but am hesistant about wt training, since i dont want to become muscular. i need to be lean like those supermodels. should i quit wt training and do pilates or yoga instead?
First off, let me say this: my advice has nothing to do with health, because there's a big difference between being healthy, and looking like a model. Don't fool yourself, models sacrifice their health to some degree in order to look the way they do. For what you want to do, I wouldn't recommend a balanced workout program, unless you are just ridiculously lucky and a balanced program happens to make you look fantastically lean. Do nothing but stretch your more muscular areas, and try to build muscle where you need more curves.
I think 2 hours of cardio is probably going to make your legs thick, unless you have naturally skinny legs - so keep that in mind if you are trying to reduce your legs - or swim for cardio instead of using a machine. If you are down to your last 10 lbs to lose, you might need some weight training to get it off. Gaining muscle is the only way to increase your base metabolic rate, so if you are already dieting as much as you can, add some weights. For bikini modeling, you need a good butt, so I'd start using weights during squats first, and focus REALLY hard on your butt muscles, try not to even use your leg muscles. Just do weights on the scrawniest parts of your body at first, as much weight as you can lift 10 times in a row, once a week, and see if you gain anything over about 4-5 weeks (I know the experts say it takes 6 weeks, but that's not the case for me - learn your own body). If you start to bulk up, it only takes a couple weeks to revert, so experiment!
For a flat stomach and over-all toning without putting on muscle, pilates is AWESOME! Try it. Yoga is great too, but if you need to flatten your stomach, it will not work as well as pilates.
When I have a special occasion coming where I want to look my leanest (as you would for a photo shoot), I do not work out for about 4-5 days before hand, eat much less than usual (just enough to sustain energy levels), eat no carbs (this reduces facial "puffiness" and tummy bloating), take a fiber supplement, drink 2 gallons of water a day, and get tons of sleep. That usually takes off 3-4 more pounds, mostly of water. It comes right back when I go back onto my usual eating and workout schedule. You shouldn't do this too often though, obviously!
(added after seeing some other answers) PS I know the experts say light weights with many repetitions for lean muscles. Again, learn your own body: my muscles get grossly defined and I put on weight if I do light weights with many reps - heavy weights once a week, low reps, get me hard sleek muscles that "disappear" unless I am flexing them on purpose - perfect for modeling.
