Balance Products - Just how do They Work? by Williams65 Samsons
Balance improvement products are designed with some instability to intentionally throw you off balance.
For instance, just sitting on a FitBall improves balance because you use so many muscles to stay seated into it. You don't even ought to "work out" on it to check out results. Sit on it while you're for your desk at work, or at the dinner table, or watching tv, or scrapbooking, or for your sewing machine. An option to the FitBall is that FitBall Seating Disc, which often mimics the FitBall Exercise Ball, but sits on your chair. It doubles as a balance disc.
Balance Discs sit on the floor, right under your feet or hands when you do squats, lunges and also push-ups. They are flat one side and round, slightly "puffed up" in the other. When you are doing all your regular exercises and you put the hands or feet on the puffy side, you are forced to stick to keeping your balance. You can also just stand on it with one foot, or sit on it when you do your crunches. The discs are small, light together with portable.
The Power Wheel can be used with either your hands or your feet, but it basically challenges your whole body to stabilize although 14" wheel rolls on the ground.
Balance Pads are generally square blocks of specialty foam (latex 100 % free, anti-fungal, non-absorbing, non-scuff, no-slip) you stand on while exercising. They are used in mobility training, lower extremity rehab and motor skill exercise.
Indo Boards. These nifty gizmos are generally skateboard-shaped wooden boards you stand on while balancing on a roller. I fully understand... Wooohoooo! There are several sizes for different skill level levels. The Original Indo Steadiness Board is super popular with board sport enthusiasts - skateboarders, snowboarders, wakeboarders, kiteboarders and surfers. Indo Boarding can be a fun, inexpensive way for anybody age 4 and up to find yourself in shape and become much more agile. Totally rad. Makes a great gift.
Don't like to work out? Here's one for you. Stand on a wobble board while talking on the phone. In no period you'll have stronger ankles together with better balance. Be careful though! As with any balance product it's going to take time to work. You may not be strong enough right off the bat.
Foam rollers are super popular. They are cylindrical pieces of high density foam including things like millions of tiny cells that bounce back when you press on these, or lay on these. They're used mainly for balance training, Pilates together with self-massage. There are several books and videos to show you how to operate them, but basically you sit or stand or lay about them while doing a number of exercises. They come in all shapes and sizes, including "half rounds" education.
There are many other balance-specific products, but they pretty much all do the same thing. They keep you unstable. Some of the names of these products are Rocker Panels, Core Boards, Twist Boards, Balance Trainers, Balance Supports, Balance Domes, Rotational Flexors and Multi-Balance Boards.
So, why get hold of special product to improve balance when you could just stand one leg with your big eyes closed? Why not just walk on the backs of park benches and hop across fence discussions or slide down a banister in your socks? Wellll, you could get really hurt to begin with. Okay, then, just stand one leg with your vision closed! Go for it. But if you invest in a few simple balance tools, you're able to do a full range associated with exercises, have fun and get balanced while doing so.

Runners-- How to use Foam Roller for IT Band?
I just got a foam roller at the suggestion of one of my teammates to deal with ITB issues. I had a 10+ mile run this morning then I used it later in the day for several minutes but when i finished rolling, my IT band actually hurt a ton (more than it did before I rolled). Did I do something wrong/mess it up somehow? Or is this pain just natural for getting used to a foam roller. (It's really painful haha sooo I really hope nothing's wrong.)
You are going to have some discomfort. The idea is that you are breaking up the adhesions. It may be painful while you are rolling up and down on the foam, but it should not continue to hurt after the exercise. Since you are using your body weight and not exerting extra pressure I don't see how you can be doing it wrong. Stretch out the IT band after wards also.
