Solving Posture Problems with Pilates    by Ian Harris

Problems with posture can stem from a number of causes, ranging from lifestyle habits to bad training programs. Many people seem to train the same muscle groups constantly whilst ignoring other important muscle groups that contribute to posture. For many it is a focus on the muscles they can see, rather than those they can't. Over training their abdominals and anterior chain can leave the lower back and posterior muscles very neglected and as a result they begin to develop bad posture.

Posture problems mainly always stem from issues with pelvic placement. Muscle imbalances pulls the pelvis forwards or backwards causing a detrimental pelvic tilt. Issues at the pelvis can cause muscles further along the kinetic chain to excessively short and tight, pulling on the spine and the postural position. Examples of this may be hunching over at the shoulders and upper back, or internal rotation at the knees and ankles. Although it may seem the problem occurs where it can be seen, many times it originates from issues at the pelvis.

Pilates is designed to correct these posture issues. It seeks to strengthen the muscles in the lower back, hips and lower abdominals and pull the pelvis back into its optimal place. It increases flexibility where muscles are short and tightens muscles where they are long and weak. This is the reason why Pilates is adopted by so many physiotherapists and medical professionals.

Suffering from lower back pain can leave you signed off work, unable to do general day to day tasks and enjoy life as you should be. Back pain can come in many forms, from many causes whether it be a sudden incident or from bad living habits, developed over time without the right correction.

If posture isn't a concern for you, then it could be something that would be if back pain occurs later on in life. Bad lifestyle can cause your posture to lose its alignment leading to the onset of back pain. Normally the abdominal muscles become tight and the lower back muscles, weak and long pulling our spine into a position that is uncomfortable to live with. This may be common to you if you sit at a desk all day or stand in such a way that puts you out of alignment.

The best way to protect your back from pain later on, is to use Pilates regularly. Pilates is designed to improve your posture by strengthening the muscles in your core and improving mobility and flexibility of surrounding muscles. Where muscles are too tight, Pilates helps lengthen them. When they are long and weak, Pilates strengthens and shortens them. The end result is a perfect posture that keeps lower back pain at bay. Pilates will make you feel stronger fitter and more mobile.

So whats the easiest way to start doing Pilates? Well, you can do Pilates at home quite easily and see just as much result as you would by paying for a trainer or a studio. Pilates is based upon eight principles. As you learn this principles you will begin to learn exercises that can strengthen and transform your core. As you get stronger, the exercises progress to continually take you beyond where you are now. You will get stronger, fitter and more mobile. The you can enjoy the fun things in life, without having to have any back pain.
