What Not To Do While Beginning With Yoga Exercises
So you are all excited about joining your new Yoga classes . . . you are up and prepared to go vegetarian, quit smoking, quit cribbing, quit back biting, quit snacking on super carb junk food, quit kicking the friendly neighborhood dog and quit a lot of other such things you know are evil, but still continue to do simply because you can’t resist the pure pleasure that you derive out of all this. Yoga to you means something ethereal, something that will make you a saint and all that, something that will bring out the cause in you to adopt saffron robes and bury the brands far behind . . . three simple words Take It Easy !!
If the mere mention of the word yoga has brought such changes in you, guess what the practice will cause . . . Pain, to begin with and then the desire to turn your back and run.
Yoga for beginners
(especially adults above the age of thirty) can be challenging but not unachievable or, unmanageable. Instead of having a self designed image of the ancient art in your mind and quitting things out of the hat, it is best to make a priority list and follow it to get maximum benefits. There are many pages over the net that are dedicated to preaching ‘the dos’ of yoga, when it comes to beginners. What also matters are ‘the don’ts’, a brief introduction to which will be provided in the following paragraphs.
To begin with, don’t attempt practice unguided or, misguided. Taken over by tsunamis of enthusiasm, many beginners who have not known the ‘A’ of yoga have tried self practice to see themselves in the emergency ward sooner than expected. Therefore, never EVER try to train yourself when you have no experience whatsoever in attempting even a very basic pose.
Secondly, when you get a trainer, don’t hide any medical conditions that you may have suffered or, may be suffering. You may feel that by hiding you will be granted the supreme yogic knowledge even if you physically incapable of handling it; but, all that hiding will cause is accentuation of the problem and may take you off any kind of physical exercises of any kind whatsoever for a long time.
Thirdly, it is childish to attempt advanced poses and postures, in your second day of introduction to yoga, merely for the satisfaction of some obscure goal. Advanced poses and postures will come at their time. What you will have to concentrate on as a beginner are those simple postures that your trainer assigns to you. Following instructions to the last word is extremely important especially when you have begun with difficult yoga styles like
Bikram yoga

Fourthly, it is really not necessary to dwell on ‘yoga fashion’ more than the real art. All that you need is a comfortable garment that allows movement of the body in all directions. Colors and prints are not as important as comfort and support. Last but certainly not that least, you don’t have to go quitting things for the sake of it. It is alright not to be a vegetarian while practicing yoga. In fact lean meat is good for health. As far as quitting bad habits like smoking and drinking is concerned, with regular yoga practice, one will invariably get rid of them.
